The proclamation raises the allowable weight for fuel, agricultural, and timber loads, and suspends Texas Low Emission Diesel rules to the extent federal law allows. It also lets farmers and truckers use dyed diesel, an off road fuel usually reserved for agricultural operations, on Texas roads. "Texas agriculture and freight run on diesel," Abbott said. "Record prices put both industries at risk and raise costs for every Texas family."
Abbott framed the move as relief that reaches beyond the farm gate. "These steps cut costs on the farm, on the road, and at the store," he said.
Abbott's office is betting that easing those rules trickles down to everyday costs, since diesel touches everything from crop transport to grocery store shelves. The proclamation only holds "to the extent authorized by the federal government," though, leaving some of the relief dependent on rules outside the state's control.
