The man launched from a mountainous area east of Millville Canyon and east of the small city of Millville, according to Cache County Chief Sheriff's Deputy Doyle Peck. Search-and-rescue crews responded to Leetham's Hollow, a stretch of canyon walls and cliffs Peck compared to the Grand Canyon, at 9:10 a.m. Sunday. They found him dead at the scene.
Peck said the man did not have enough lift with his wingsuit when something went wrong mid-jump. His identity has not been released while authorities work to notify his family.
The death adds to a long list of fatal accidents tied to wingsuit BASE jumping, a sport where a single equipment or timing failure at low altitude leaves almost no room for recovery. Jumpers rely on fabric wings stretched between their arms and legs to generate lift after leaping from fixed objects like cliffs.
Cache County authorities have not said whether the man was an experienced jumper or what specifically caused the wingsuit to fail. The exact sequence of events 700 feet up remains unclear.
