Governor Abbott Directs TCEQ To Halt Data Center Permits - KCBD

Abbott's office says the Public Utility Commission of Texas, ERCOT, and the Texas Water Development Board all need the audit's findings before they can make informed calls on new development. Until that information comes in, no state agency can move forward on regulatory approvals tied to data center construction anywhere in the state.

"Simply put, Texans must come first," Abbott said in a statement announcing the halt, adding that data centers must pay their own way and protect the state's grid.

For Lubbock and the rest of West Texas, this matters because data centers pull enormous amounts of electricity and water. Both resources are already stretched thin on the South Plains during peak summer months. A statewide pause means any data center company eyeing land here has to wait on Austin before TCEQ can process paperwork. Regular Texans avoid footing the bill for infrastructure that data centers alone would strain, at least until ERCOT delivers hard numbers.

One audit in Austin just put every data center project in Texas, including any headed for Lubbock's backyard, on hold indefinitely.
