The nonprofit posted the request on its website, framing extra Halloween haul as a head start on giving back this season. Even candy corn counts, according to the organization, so nobody has to feel guilty about what they hand over.
The idea is simple. Instead of letting bowls of fun-size chocolate bars and lollipops sit forgotten in a kitchen cabinet until next October, Lubbock residents can pass them along to a cause that turns them into gifts for someone else's stocking. Volunteer Lubbock is accepting both candy and cash donations.
For families who always end up with more candy than they know what to do with, this gives that surplus a purpose. It also means kids or families who might otherwise go without holiday treats could get a stocking stuffer this year thanks to a neighbor's extra Kit Kats or Skittles.
Small individual contributions, multiplied across the city, add up toward the $6,500 goal. Turns out the candy nobody wants to eat might be exactly what someone else's holiday stocking needs.
