The storm hit in bands of heavy rain over a long stretch of time, and Barnstable County took the brunt of it. Falmouth alone recorded several readings above 5 inches, with one gauge 5.7 miles north of town hitting 6 inches. Other nearby spots, including North Falmouth, East Sandwich and an area near Forestdale, also logged rainfall above 5 inches.
That kind of sustained rain adds up fast for people on Cape Cod. Flooded roads, soaked yards and slow drainage followed, the result of a long soak rather than a quick downpour. Because Falmouth kept turning up across multiple gauges, residents there felt the storm from several directions at once as it lingered overhead.
Camp Edwards ended up as the top total in the county, more than a full inch ahead of the next-highest reading in Falmouth. The National Weather Service kept updating its rainfall reports as the storm moved through, and Barnstable County numbers stood out as some of the highest recorded anywhere in Massachusetts during the event.
Seven inches of rain in one storm is enough to turn a normal weekend into a waiting game for the water to go somewhere else.
