A police officer found McKinsey on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds in the small Bay Area city, located about 35 miles east of San Francisco. Witnesses started calling 911 around the same time the officer discovered him. McKinsey was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a press release from the city of Dublin issued Sunday.
The couple accused in the killing are McKinsey's in-laws, both in their 70s. He had spent nearly four years as head of engineering for the Times's games department, the team behind puzzles played by millions of people every day.
It was the kind of place where nobody expects to find a body. For McKinsey's colleagues at the Times, the loss cuts close to a small, tight-knit team that builds some of the paper's most popular daily products. Police haven't said publicly what pushed two people in their 70s to allegedly kill their own daughter's husband.
