Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian talks about proposal to reopen Strait of Hormuz, says Iran would allow nuclear inspectors

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran would allow nuclear inspectors back into the country and would "abide by whatever we commit to" if the United States accepts Iran's latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Pezeshkian made the comments in an interview with "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan" that aired Friday. Asked whether he'd have met with President Trump in New York this week, an idea Trump himself raised, Pezeshkian pointed to an "atmosphere of distrust" between the two countries.

He said he'd need to know "what exactly we want to reach an understanding on" before agreeing to any meeting. Pezeshkian ran through a list of times he says the U.S. Attacked Iran while the two countries were in the middle of negotiations, framing that history as the reason for his hesitation. Iran's foreign minister was also involved in the broader diplomatic exchange, according to the interview.

The stakes go beyond the two countries. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's busiest oil shipping routes, and any deal tied to reopening it would ripple through global energy markets. A nuclear inspection agreement, if it holds, would mark a shift after years of standoff between Tehran and Washington.

Pezeshkian didn't rule out talks.
