Rob Greene, Texas Tech's safeties coach, was targeted by at least two other FBS programs this offseason after the Red Raiders won 12 games and a Power Four conference championship.

Cincinnati and Tulane both tried to hire Greene away from Lubbock, according to the Avalanche-Journal. He wasn't the defensive coordinator, but he's the right-hand man to the guy who is: Shiel Wood. When you can't pry the architect loose, you go after his lieutenant. That's exactly what those programs attempted.

Greene stayed. That matters for a Texas Tech defense that now has to defend what it built, in a conference and a sport where everyone is studying your film and recruiting your staff the moment you have a big year. Winning 12 games puts a target on your coaches as much as your program.

For fans who've watched Tech struggle to hold onto good assistant coaches over the years, Greene's decision to stay signals something about the culture Joey McGuire has built inside the Jones. Programs that just had a fluke year don't usually get to keep the coaches other schools are calling.
