The Red Raiders trailed early before pulling away in the second half. Running back Cameron Dickey punched in a 13-yard touchdown to put Tech up 28-14, then quarterback Hammond found receiver Coy Eakin for a 21-yard score to make it 35-14. Interceptions piled up on both sides, three apiece, before Tech's defense and offense took over down the stretch.

Hammond capped his night with a 23-yard touchdown run at the 10:41 mark of the fourth quarter, pushing the lead to 42-14. Backup quarterback Thomas Castellanos then connected with receiver Malcolm Simmons on a 28-yard touchdown pass at 5:14, Tech's final score of the game.

For Tech fans, the second-half surge that erased any halftime nerves is a good sign for a squad ranked in the top 15 nationally. Backup quarterback production in garbage time also gives the coaching staff depth to lean on later in the season.

Tech scored more points in the second half alone than Sam Houston managed in the entire game.
