New Mexico jury finds Facebook liable of deceiving users about privacy protections - EverythingLubbock.com

A New Mexico jury found Facebook liable Friday for deceiving users about privacy protections on the platform, delivering another costly legal blow to the social media giant.

Jurors determined Facebook committed more than 43 million violations of state consumer protection law. Attorneys representing New Mexico are asking the judge to impose the maximum penalty of $5,000 per violation, a figure that would run into the billions if granted in full.

The New Mexico Department of Justice called the verdict a major win for consumers in the state. In a statement, the department said the ruling "holds one of the world's largest technology companies accountable for its conduct."

For New Mexico users, the verdict confirms what state attorneys argued in court. Facebook misled people about how their personal data and privacy settings actually worked. It adds to a growing pile of legal setbacks that have already cost the company billions in fines and settlements over the years.

With 43 million violations on the books, even a fraction of the maximum penalty would add up fast, and the final number now rests with the judge.

Facebook has faced privacy litigation across multiple states, but this verdict hands New Mexico prosecutors a legal win most other states haven't managed to secure in court.
