The storm dumped more than 7 inches of rain by 8 a.m. Monday at Joint Base Cape Cod and in Acushnet, Massachusetts, the weather service reported. A flood watch remains in effect through Monday for eastern Massachusetts, with rain expected to continue falling.
High winds and heavy surf battered shorelines, leaving residents across the region dealing with standing water and outages. Low-lying areas face continued risk of water pooling on roads and in yards, and anyone without power has to wait out a system that shows no sign of easing fast.
Coastal towns like Wellfleet and island communities like Block Island got hit hardest by wind, a reminder that a storm this late in fall can still pack a punch usually reserved for winter. Two of the hardest-hit spots, one on the tip of Cape Cod and one out in Rhode Island's waters, clocked identical wind speeds miles apart.
