The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court Sunday to revive mail ballot restrictions after a federal judge blocked enforcement of a presidential executive order ahead of the November midterms.

U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani extended her order barring the Postal Service from carrying out the executive order's requirements. The administration's Supreme Court filing came in direct response to that ruling, pushing the fight to the nation's highest court as states across the country have already begun sending out mail ballots.

With ballots already in the mail in some states, any ruling that changes the rules now would hit voters mid-process, creating potential confusion about which ballots count and which ones don't. For Texans who rely on mail voting, including older residents and those with disabilities, the back-and-forth in federal court means the rules governing their ballot could shift before Election Day arrives.

The administration has limited runway to get a favorable ruling implemented before November, and the legal fight is now moving faster than the election calendar comfortably allows.

This is at least the second time the Trump administration has gone to the Supreme Court on this specific executive order, suggesting lower courts have not been receptive to the restrictions the White House wants in place.
