Trump's order argues the term "Artificial Intelligence" no longer fits what American companies are building. "The extraordinary technologies being pioneered by American innovators far exceed what was envisioned when the term 'Artificial Intelligence' first came into use," he wrote. The order calls for federal terminology to reflect what it describes as the "limitless opportunities" the technology creates for the country.
The meeting took place as OpenAI teased an unspecified "new thing" it plans to unveil, bringing executive branch officials face to face with the people building the systems the new order is meant to describe.
For federal agencies, the change means adjusting how they refer to AI in official language and policy, a shift that starts at the top with a presidential signature rather than industry consensus. It signals how seriously the administration wants to frame the technology's trajectory, even before the public fully understands what OpenAI and others are about to release.
