US Mint begins circulation, sale of Trump $1 coins - politico.com

The U.S.

The U.S. Mint began circulating $1 coins bearing President Donald Trump's portrait Wednesday, marking the first time a living person has appeared on American currency since 1866.

The coins were released to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary. They are available for purchase in packages of 25 or 100 coins, starting at $61, with individual coins running between $1.55 and $2.44 depending on which package a buyer chooses. The coin's face carries the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST."

For anyone who collects coins or follows presidential history, this one lands differently than most commemorative releases. The gap since the last living person appeared on U.S. Currency is nearly 160 years, putting this in genuinely rare territory regardless of where you stand politically. The collector packages price them well above face value from the start.

The 250th anniversary angle gives the Mint a clear hook for the release, though the decision to put a sitting president on circulating currency is the detail that will keep people talking long after the anniversary year wraps up.
