Google Maps is now showing Lake Ontario as "Lake America" for users in the United States, following a name-change order from President Donald Trump.

The update rolled out days after Trump's directive, which came against the backdrop of an escalating trade dispute between the U.S. And Canada. Google confirmed it made the change to reflect the presidential order. Canadian users and those elsewhere still see the original name.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford did not stay quiet. He put up a billboard-sized sign on the Canadian shoreline that read "Lake Ontario. Now and Always," a response that leaned more toward mockery than anger. Canadian leaders broadly met the move with ridicule rather than formal protest.

For people here in Lubbock, this is mostly a story about watching two countries argue over what to call a body of water that sits about 1,700 miles from the South Plains. But it does raise a real question about how tech companies like Google respond to government directives, and what it means when the map on your phone shows you something different depending on which side of a border you're on.

Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes, borders both the United States and Canada, so its name is now officially different depending on who you ask.
