Loop 88 construction continues as work on Phase 3C begins - KCBD

Williams Brothers Construction Co.

Phase 3C covers the stretch from Avenue U to half a mile east of I-27/US 87, running between 114th and 146th Streets along the I-27/US 87 corridor. The work is part of TxDOT's larger effort to convert FM 1585, currently a rural two-lane roadway, into Loop 88, a six-lane freeway. That is a significant redesign for a stretch of road that a lot of south Lubbock drivers treat as a daily shortcut.

For folks who live or work near the South Loop, this phase will bring months of construction activity through a wide swath of the city's southern edge. The Avenue U anchor point connects this segment to existing development, and anyone commuting along the I-27 corridor should expect disruption.

Phase 3C alone carries a price tag of $221.6 million, which puts the cost of upgrading a single phase of one loop at roughly the same scale as many cities spend on entire highway projects.
