What it costs

Urgent care, freestanding ER, or hospital

These three treat different things and bill very differently. This is about cost and logistics only — it is not medical advice. If it is an emergency, call 911.

Urgent care

Walk-in clinic staffed for non-emergency problems. Bills like a clinic visit, not a hospital visit.

Lowest of the three for the same non-emergency visit.

Freestanding ER

A standalone emergency room not attached to a hospital. It is a real ER, with real ER pricing.

Bills at full hospital-ER rates, and may add a separate facility fee.

This is the one that surprises people. A freestanding ER can look like an urgent care from the parking lot. Texas requires them to post that they charge hospital-ER rates and may bill a facility fee — read the sign at the door before you check in.

Hospital emergency room

Full hospital emergency department. Lubbock is the regional trauma hub for West Texas and eastern New Mexico.

Highest, but the right call for an actual emergency — cost should not be the deciding factor there.

This week’s tip

A “freestanding ER” is not an urgent care

They often sit in a strip center and look like a walk-in clinic, but they bill at full hospital-ER rates and can add a separate facility fee. Texas requires them to post a notice about their billing — read the sign at the door before you check in.

Cost and paperwork information, not medical advice.

Common questions

What is the difference between urgent care and an emergency room in Lubbock?

Urgent care is a walk-in clinic for non-emergency problems and bills like a clinic visit. A hospital emergency room bills at hospital rates. Where can I go in Lubbock without insurance?

The Community Health Center of Lubbock (CHCL) sees patients regardless of insurance on a sliding fee scale, and states that services will not be denied due to inability to pay. Call ahead to confirm current hours and what to bring.
