How we verify
What we check before something goes up, by type of content, and what each label on the site means.
Weather and closures
Weather alerts on our weather page come straight from the National Weather Service for the Lubbock area. The forecast comes from Open-Meteo. We post a school, road or event closure only after the district, agency or organizer that made the call has announced it, and we link to that announcement.
News from other outlets
Most stories on The 806 Wire summarize reporting by other news outlets. Each one carries a "From" label with the outlet's name and links to the original story, so you can read their full report.
Our own reporting
When 806 Connect reports a story itself, the byline says By 806 Connect and the story lists the records and people it relied on in a Sources box.
Business information
Listings start from public business information. When a listing is missing hours, a photo or a description, we may add them from the business's own website and credit the photo. Once an owner claims a listing, they can edit it. Edits on a free listing wait for our review. Owners on the Verified or Featured plan publish edits right away.
Specials, menus and prices come from the business. We do not check them against the register, so they carry the Business-provided label.
Things neighbors send us
Events, tips and specials sent through our forms do not publish on their own. A person reviews each one first. A tip is a lead, not a fact: until it is confirmed, we only say what a neighbor says, never that it happened.
Reviews and moderation
Star ratings are Google's, shown as Google reports them. Reviews written on 806 Connect are tied to an email address the writer confirms, and anything that looks risky is held for a person to read before it posts. Anyone can report a review. A reported review stays up until a person decides, so one complaint cannot knock a review down.
Businesses can reply to reviews. They cannot pay to add, hide or reorder them, and nobody gets anything extra for leaving a good one.
Openings
Our coming-soon tracker gives each opening a status: coming soon, opening soon, now open, closing or closed. Anything we have not confirmed is marked Unconfirmed, and unconfirmed openings stay off the food page.
Public safety
Crime, fire and emergency news comes from official sources only: police, fire, the city, the county, school districts and the National Weather Service, or a news outlet reporting what they said. We do not post from scanner traffic, rumors or screenshots of social posts, and we do not name private people from any of them.
What the labels mean
A label sits on the item itself so you can tell what you are looking at before you read it. We only show a label when we can back it up, so some of these are not in use yet.

The 806 Verified badge on business listings is different from these labels. It comes with a paid listing plan, and what it means is explained next to the badge and on our advertising page. Advertising and partners
