Lubbock High, Coronado both seeking first win of ’26 tonight on “Thursday Night Throwdown” - KCBD

The Westerners looked sharp early last week against Estacado, with running back Nathan Johnson punching in a 2-yard touchdown to put Lubbock High up 7-0. They still led 10-7 with under two minutes left in the first half before Estacado pulled away for a 47-13 final. The Mustangs had a similar story, holding a 28-9 lead through three quarters of their opener before the game slipped away.

For both programs, tonight is less about rivalry and more about getting right. An 0-1 start stings, but 0-2 is a hole that takes weeks to dig out of. Whichever team finds a way to close out a game tonight walks away with momentum and some breathing room heading into the rest of the early season slate.

The Westerners and Mustangs are two of Lubbock's oldest programs, and their matchups tend to draw folks from across the city regardless of the records. Tonight, though, the scoreboard matters more than the history between them.

Someone has to break that trend before the final whistle.
