Wyoming's Republican Gov. Mark Gordon has asked his state attorney general to investigate what he called "aggressive" behavior by Justice Department election monitors who observed last week's primary election in Laramie County.

The Justice Department sent two Civil Rights Division attorneys to Laramie County, which includes the state capital of Cheyenne. Gordon said state officials, including the attorney general, were not told in advance that the federal monitors were coming.

Gordon raised the issue at a state canvassing board meeting Wednesday. "It sounded like the behavior of the observers was a bit aggressive," he said, describing the situation as "irregular." The lack of coordination between the federal government and state officials appears to be at the center of the complaint, not the presence of monitors themselves.

A Republican governor pushing back against his own party's administration over election oversight does not happen every day. Gordon is no Democrat looking for a fight.
