A Texas Tech engineer just landed $2.1 million from the National Institutes of Health to push forward imaging technology that lets doctors see deeper inside the human body than current tools allow.

Indrajit Srivastava, an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering, received the grant through the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. The award is called a Maximizing Investigators' Research Award, a funding mechanism designed to give individual researchers sustained support for a broad program of work rather than a single narrow project.

Srivastava's focus is second near-infrared imaging, known as NIR-II bioimaging. The technology gives clinicians sharper, clearer views deep inside the body, which matters enormously in diagnosis and treatment. His lab has been developing the tools that make that kind of imaging possible.
