Davis College Advances Meat, Poultry Safety Training in Latin America - Texas Tech University

The effort runs through the university's Department of Animal & Food Sciences, which built out a program specifically for Spanish-speaking food producers and processors. For a lot of those workers, specialized training in meat science and value-added processing is tough to come by. Language barriers, geography and limited access to technical expertise keep it out of reach, according to Texas Tech.

The program connects industry professionals with practical science and emerging food safety systems they can bring back to their own companies. That's the pitch anyway, straight from the college. It fits the kind of work Texas Tech has built a name for in agricultural sciences, even if most folks in Lubbock only think of Davis College in terms of the Goat or Tech's ag judging teams.

For Lubbock, it is another example of a Texas Tech program with reach well past the South Plains. The university trains people who go on to run food safety systems in other countries, work that starts in classrooms and labs not far from campus.
