Lubbock Kids Gear Up For Second Annual Tricycle Derby At Safety City

The City of Lubbock Parks and Recreation Department teamed up with Lubbock ISD to bring the derby back for round two. Races run on a tentative schedule, with 3-year-olds starting at 9:15 a.m., 4-year-olds following at 10 a.m. And 5-year-olds closing things out at 11 a.m. Safety City has long served as a spot where Lubbock kids learn road safety basics, and organizers built the derby to make those lessons stick through actual competition.

For families around town, this means a free Saturday morning activity that doubles as a safety lesson dressed up as a race. Parents get bragging rights for their preschooler's trike skills, and kids get an early taste of organized competition before they're old enough for youth soccer leagues or Little League at the city's park fields. The age-group format keeps things fair, so a determined 3-year-old isn't lined up against a speedy 5-year-old.

No entry fee gets mentioned, no big prizes, just tricycles, stopwatches and a bunch of toddlers taking the whole thing very seriously.
