Las Vegas tied its all-time daily rainfall record for October after 1.08 inches fell into Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service. The last time the city saw that much rain on one October day was 1947. Videos on social media showed a torrent of water rushing through a street near the Las Vegas Strip, with a Ferris wheel and casinos in the background.
Rachel hit Southern California's coast too. Wind, rain and unusually large waves forced oceanside residents in Long Beach to evacuate. Waves tore apart a historic boardwalk and smashed against coastal homes.
The new flood watches run through Monday afternoon for a large swath of Utah, southeast Idaho, and northern and central Arizona, including the Grand Canyon. Andrew Orrison, a weather service meteorologist, said localized flash flooding remains a risk across the region. He said the Southwest has seen the worst of what Rachel brought, but disturbed weather still lingers.
The added rain does not come from Rachel. A different weather system moving across the West is driving it, and forecasters expect the precipitation to end by Wednesday.
