TxDOT data analyst Elaine Wendt said she "wanted to explore historic regional folklore and haunted sites throughout our state." The "Phantom Layer" arrived this October in honor of the 20th anniversary of the agency's Statewide Planning map. Switch it on in the overlay section and the map reveals haunted buildings, cryptid sightings, and other Halloween-related locations across Texas.

Lubbock made the map, but only once. The cemetery is the sole local ghost story on it. The age-old debate over whether restless spirits haunt the grounds still scares residents and passersby. According to the lore, anyone who wants to stay unbothered by the ghosts must kiss the feet of the angel statue.

Anybody hoping to see more Lubbock legends pinned there is out of luck this year. Citizens can't submit their own additions to the interactive map yet. TxDOT is working on making that possible starting in 2027.

For now, Lubbock's entire ghost map comes down to one cemetery and one angel's feet.
