Lubbock tied a 101-degree record Thursday that has stood since 1939, matching the city's all-time high for the date after nearly 90 years untouched.

The heat is not a one-day fluke. Temperatures across the South Plains are running well above normal, and Friday looks to bring more of the same, with most areas expected to climb back above 100 degrees. That kind of sustained stretch makes this more than just a hot week on the calendar.

There is a small break possible Friday afternoon and into the early evening, when isolated thunderstorms could roll through. Some of those storms may carry gusty winds and brief downpours, but coverage is expected to stay scattered, so do not count on rain finding your yard.

For people here, that means another day of limiting time outside during peak afternoon hours, keeping an eye on kids and elderly neighbors, and making sure pets have water and shade.
