The observatory has operated since 1980, but access had mostly stayed limited to classes and research projects run through the Department of Physics and Astronomy. That changes now, with the department opening remote viewing to the wider Texas Tech community, meaning anyone with a campus login could photograph the same sky researchers have used for decades.

Assistant professor Elias Aydi says the push comes from a department motto: the sky is for everyone. He wants people on campus to experience what West Texas dark skies actually look like, without needing to drive out to Shallowater or own a telescope themselves.

For regular students, this means real astronomical equipment becomes available from a dorm room or a coffee shop table instead of staying locked behind research schedules. Faculty and staff who never had a reason to visit the observatory in person now get a shot at that same access. Now the biggest obstacle to viewing West Texas stars might just be a slow Wi-Fi connection.
