Meurer is still drawing a paycheck for a position estimated at about $70,000 a year, even though the court order has Corley sitting in the seat. On top of the salary, Meurer has submitted a request for more than $10,000 in legal fees tied to the dispute.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Jordan Rackler is pushing back hard. "I don't believe that Lubbock County should be paying Mark Meurer based on he hasn't been working," Rackler said. That question now sits in front of the full commissioners court, and it's not a small one for anyone who pays property taxes in the county.

Double-paying a county salary tends to get noticed fast in Lubbock, especially with a legal fee request stacked on top. Precinct 2 covers real neighborhoods with real needs, road repairs, budget votes, the everyday business a commissioner handles. Nobody seems totally sure right now who has been doing that work, or who should get paid for it, while a court sorts out who actually holds the seat and the legal bill keeps climbing.
