Sorkin wrote and directed the new film about a Facebook whistleblower who leaked incriminating documents to a Wall Street Journal reporter. Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong star. Critics gave it mixed-to-negative reviews, and audiences landed on a B- CinemaScore.

The original, directed by David Fincher, grossed over $224 million worldwide and won three of its eight Oscar nominations. A similar run looks like a stretch for the new one.

Jessica Chastain's horror movie "Other Mommy" took the top spot instead. Universal's release earned $27.5 million in 3,365 theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday. Critics and audiences were harsh, and it joins "Megalopolis" and "Hereditary" with a D+ CinemaScore. But it cost around $19 million to make, and 50 international markets pushed its global debut to $45.2 million.

Jim Orr, Universal's head of domestic distribution, said the crowd split evenly by gender and about two-thirds were between 18 and 34. "No matter how you look at it, everybody turned out for it," Orr said. Producer Blumhouse Atomic Monster, behind "Backrooms" and "Obsession," collects another horror win.
