Lubbock is divided into four main quadrants — North, South, East, and West — with Texas Tech University anchoring the southwest corner. The Loop 289 highway circles the city and serves as the outer boundary most residents use for directions.
Where to Eat First
Lubbock's food scene is more diverse than newcomers expect. The city has strong West Texas BBQ, excellent Tex-Mex, and a growing craft dining scene near the university. Start with a few local staples before finding your spots.
Essential Services
Before anything else, get your Texas driver's license (Texas DPS office is on 66th Street), update your vehicle registration, and find a primary care doctor. All three are easier done in the first two weeks than in month three.
Meeting People
Lubbock has a strong civic culture. Local churches, Texas Tech events, the farmers market on Saturdays, and neighborhood Facebook groups are reliable ways to meet people quickly. The Depot District on Thursday and Friday nights is where a cross-section of Lubbock gathers.
