At least 5 tornadoes touched down in Chicago area during Tuesday's destructive derecho - NBC 5 Chicago

Tuesday's powerful derecho ripped through the Chicago area, spawning at least five confirmed tornadoes that left significant damage across the region.

One particularly strong EF-2 tornado, packing 115 mph peak winds, tore a destructive path from near Monee through Crete. An EF-1 twister also hit Wilmington in Will County, while another EF-0 struck Oswego, causing localized chaos. This wasn't just a typical thunderstorm system. A full-blown derecho, an inland hurricane with widespread straight-line winds, brought the whole dangerous mess, compounding the tornado destruction.

For thousands across the sprawling Chicago metro, this means extensive property damage, widespread power outages, and rebuilding efforts stretching for weeks. Its a harsh lesson in severe weathers destructive potential. We West Texans understand this scenario well from our own wild spring seasons and unexpected storms rolling off the Caprock. One system churning out five distinct tornadoes is a sobering thought, especially as summer heat keeps our own atmosphere primed for pop-up cells.
