Right now, 72 kids in the Lubbock area are waiting for a Big. That is a real number, not a vague ask, and it means dozens of local kids are sitting on a list with no match in sight. Big Brothers Big Sisters says the time commitment is just one hour a week, low enough that almost anyone with a free evening could sign up.

For Lubbock families already matched, nights like this one at the drive-in are the payoff, a low-cost outing that turns mentorship into something fun instead of just a scheduled meeting. The 72 kids still waiting are a reminder that the program runs on volunteers, not just donations. Sponsors can buy the movie tickets and the popcorn. They cannot show up for an hour a week and be somebody's Big.
