Crews battle wildfires in western U.S. and Canada

Smoke from over 180 new wildfires burning across the Western U.S.

This isn't just about a slightly obscured view from your porch in Tech Terrace or a greyish tinge to the sunset over Buddy Holly Hall. Smoke particles can worsen existing respiratory conditions like asthma. Even a short walk around Mae Simmons Park might become difficult for some, or perhaps your usual morning jog through the Depot District. Many residents could notice a distinct, acrid smell in the air, similar to a distant campfire or a prescribed burn gone a bit awry. This long-distance smoke also serves as a potent reminder of the volatile dry conditions that often grip our own region, especially as we head into summer.

Over 94 large fires currently burn nationwide, a sobering thought given our own High Plains weather patterns.
