Father of USS Lincoln sailor taken into ICE detention while son deployed in Middle East - The Guardian
Luis Manuel Aviles Roa, a Nicaraguan man whose son is currently deployed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the Middle East, was taken into federal immigration detention after a vehicle stop in Key West, Florida, according to the U.S.
Border patrol agents arrested Aviles Roa during the stop, a DHS spokesperson confirmed Sunday. His son, Joshua Aviles, posted about the arrest publicly, writing that he had been at sea for over nine months before receiving a call that his father had been taken by ICE.
"I've been deployed for over nine months, out at sea in the Middle East aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, fighting for a country that has given me everything," Joshua wrote. "I just got a call that my dad was taken by ICE."
For military families here in Lubbock, where plenty of folks have kids or spouses serving overseas, that kind of phone call from a deployed service member lands differently. Joshua cannot leave his post. He cannot show up at a detention facility. He can only wait.
