Fire fighter training exercise scheduled at Lubbock Airport

The drills are part of ARFF certification training, the specialized firefighting discipline required at commercial airports. These exercises involve real fire and smoke, which means anyone near the airport perimeter during those hours may notice unusual activity on the airfield.

For travelers flying in or out of Lubbock this week, the training is scheduled well in advance and should not disrupt normal flight operations. Neighbors on the south side of the city may see smoke or flames and should know it is a controlled exercise, not an emergency.

Airport rescue firefighters train to a different standard than city crews. They have to be ready to reach any point on an active runway within minutes and handle jet fuel fires, which burn far hotter and faster than a typical structure fire. That is a different skill set, and the live-fire drills are how they keep it sharp.

Three days of back-to-back training suggests this is a recertification cycle, not a one-off drill, which means the airport is keeping its emergency response credentials current with federal aviation requirements.
