Flash Flood Warning issued September 15 at 7:46PM CDT until September 15 at 8:30PM CDT by NWS Lubbock TX

Local law enforcement reported the flooding to the National Weather Service Lubbock office just before 7:46 p.m. The warning covers small creeks, streams, urban streets and underpasses across the western part of the city, along with other low-lying and poorly drained spots that tend to fill up fast when storms move through. Forecasters said heavy rain wasn't expected to continue, but the water already on the ground would keep causing problems into the evening.

That's the tricky part with flash flooding here. A quick, heavy burst like this one can shut down an underpass or strand a car on a low street just as easily as an all-night storm. Anyone driving through western Lubbock Monday night dealt with standing water on roads not built to drain that much rain that quickly.

For neighbors in the affected area, the advice is the same every time this happens. Don't drive into flooded streets or underpasses, even ones that look shallow. Cars stall out and get swept up faster than people expect, and low-lying yards and streets can hold water long after the rain stops.
