Gov. Greg Abbott proposed further limiting screen time in K-12 classrooms across the state on Thursday. The proposal builds on a state law approved last year that banned cellphone use in K-12 schools, already shifting technology policies in local districts like Lubbock ISD and Frenship ISD. The governor presented his idea at a campaign stop at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, framing it as a direct way to improve student learning statewide. He wants legislators to limit the use of electronic devices such as laptops and tablets in classrooms. Instead, Abbott emphasized a return to physical materials including books, handwriting practice, and direct teacher instruction.

For West Texas families, this could mean a significant change in how students engage with learning tools daily. Abbott argued that technology should only be for specific lessons and assessments, not a substitute for educators or proven methods of learning. Studies he cited purportedly show decreased screen time improves academic outcomes. The plan would require legislative approval to take effect.

If passed, Texas classrooms would prioritize pencils and paper even as the digital world expands all around them.
