Lubbock and most areas off the Caprock are under a Heat Advisory Tuesday from 1 p.m.
An upper-level ridge of high pressure, extending from Southern California across the desert Southwest and much of Texas, is driving these intense conditions. Lower elevation zones will experience the 104 to 108-degree highs. Areas farther west are forecast to see temperatures range from 100 to 104 degrees.
This combination of extreme heat and dry conditions significantly elevates fire danger across much of the region all day Tuesday. Dry air aloft completely eliminates any chance of rain through Tuesday night. Overnight, residents will find little reprieve, as lows will only drop into the 70s to around 80 degrees by Wednesday morning.
These sustained high temperatures are well above the mid-90s average typically seen in mid-August.
