LEDC and city representatives handed the check to SPC's HART faculty and students on Aug. 31 at the Levelland campus. Justin Balderas, LEDC's executive director, said the corporation sets aside money for workforce development annually, and the growing demand for HART professionals caught their attention as a direct fit for what SPC already trains people to do.
"Working with the College allows us to create the jobs that employers need," Balderas said.
For students working toward HVAC and refrigeration careers, this kind of funding means better equipment and supplies in the classroom, which translates directly to hands-on preparation before they ever step onto a job site. The South Plains region runs on trades like this, and a well-equipped program at SPC means more qualified workers entering the local workforce rather than employers scrambling to find them elsewhere.
HART fields have seen rising demand nationally, and Levelland's EDC calculated that investing in training now pays off faster than waiting for workers to show up on their own.
