Lubbock County Elections Office processing 7,500 applications after DPS backlog - KCBD
Lubbock County's Elections Office received more than 7,500 new voter registrations and updates on Tuesday after a backlog tied to the Texas Department of Public Safety system, Elections Administrator Troy Havard said.
People affected are those who recently applied for a new driver's license or made a change to an existing one through DPS and checked the box to register to vote. Havard said the issue only touches DPS applications. Anything mailed in or submitted another way was not caught up in the backlog.
Havard said the delay will not keep anyone from casting a ballot in November. His office is working through the applications now.
For folks in Lubbock who recently got or renewed a driver's license and checked that box, it is worth a second look before Election Day. If your update came through DPS in recent weeks, your registration might still be sitting in that stack of 7,500 the county is processing.
Still, 7,500 applications piling up at once from a single state system is the kind of number that makes you double check the mail before you trust the box you checked at the DMV.
