MapQuest app reaches No 1 on US Apple list after defying Trump’s Lake Ontario order - The Guardian

Trump issued an executive order on August 27 directing federal agencies to refer to the smallest of the Great Lakes by the new name, part of a broader trade dispute with Canada. Google Maps quickly complied, switching to "Lake America" for U.S. Users. Apple Maps was still weighing its response as of Tuesday. MapQuest went the other direction entirely, openly dismissing the order and keeping the original name on its maps.

That stance apparently resonated with a lot of people. MapQuest leapfrogged both Google Maps and Apple Maps to claim the number one spot on the U.S. App Store most-downloaded list, a ranking The Guardian confirmed as of Tuesday morning. TechCrunch first reported the climb.

For folks in Lubbock who rely on navigation apps daily, whether cutting across Loop 289 or finding a new spot off 34th Street, the app rankings rarely make headlines. This one did because the choice of which app topped the charts had almost nothing to do with features and everything to do with a map label.

MapQuest, one of the earliest names in online navigation, had largely been an afterthought for years before this week.
