New secretary of state will continue to defend Texas’ open primaries against GOP lawsuit - The Texas Tribune

Texas' new Secretary of State, Robert Howden, is defending the state's open primary system against a lawsuit from the Texas GOP.

This means Lubbock residents can still choose which party's primary they wish to participate in without declaring an official party affiliation, a freedom many voters appreciate. A victory for the Texas GOP would force voters to commit to one party, potentially shifting outcomes in local elections for everything from city council seats to state representative races across the South Plains and even statewide offices. Texas is one of only fifteen states allowing voters this unique flexibility in primary elections.
