Thierry served four terms in the Texas House as a Democrat before losing her 2024 primary after she broke with her party to support bills banning doctors from providing transition-related medical care to children and teens. She then switched to the Republican Party. Abbott had already appointed her to the state juvenile justice board, and Tuesday's move to the bench signals he is doubling down on that relationship.

After her primary loss, Thierry became director of political strategy for Genspect, an international group that opposes trans-related medical policies for minors.
