Student section of Texas Tech football stadium to keep Jones name - Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

Athletics director Kirby Hocutt broke the news Thursday, Aug. 20, at the annual Red Raider Club kickoff luncheon at the Memorial Civic Center. The announcement gives the university a way to keep "Pack the Jones" in the vocabulary of fans and students while the full facility moves forward under the Galaxy Stadium name.

For students who have grown up hearing "Pack the Jones" as practically a battle cry on fall Saturdays, the naming decision means that phrase still has a literal home in the northwest corner of the stadium. For everyone else, the shift means getting used to two names under one roof.

Hocutt told the luncheon crowd that students are "going to continue to show up at the Jones," signaling that the university sees the branding split as a feature, not a complication. Keeping the Jones name attached to the loudest, most unpredictable section of the stadium is either a savvy nod to tradition or a sign that fully letting go of the old name was never really on the table.
