Summer Heat Continues for Labor Day

Temperatures will ease off slightly Monday compared to recent days. Folks on the Caprock can expect afternoon highs in the middle to upper 90s, while areas off the Caprock, lower in elevation, will push into the lower 100s.

That split matters here. Anyone heading toward the Caprock's edge, whether it's a Labor Day cookout off 82nd Street or a drive past the city limits, should expect the heat to hit harder the farther down they go.

For anyone squeezing in a last holiday outing before school schedules and fall routines take over, this is still full summer weather. Hydration and shade matter as much now as they did in July. Outdoor plans around the Depot District or a walk through a Tech Terrace park should account for that heat, especially if activities run into early afternoon.

Labor Day usually signals a turn toward cooler air in a lot of places. Not this year in Lubbock, where the thermometer is holding onto summer with both hands.
