Texas DPS identified Kelly Pope, 41, of Hobbs, as the victim of the crash, which occurred just after 11 p.m. Investigators reported Pope was driving a 2001 GMC Sierra pickup west on FM 41 when the incident unfolded. Her truck left the roadway, veering into the south barrow ditch. It then skidded back across the highway, entering the north barrow ditch. The pickup continued into a nearby field before rolling over, with Pope pronounced dead at the scene.
This tragic incident highlights the inherent risks of navigating our county's less-traveled routes. For residents who regularly use outer roads like FM 41, particularly during late-night hours, it serves as a grave reminder about rural driving conditions. The loss leaves a family in Hobbs grieving, impacting lives far beyond Lubbock's city limits.
Pope's death marks another somber statistic on our regional highways, frequently used by both local commuters and visitors passing through the South Plains.
