Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems, were found liable for damages after Jones repeatedly claimed the 2012 mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut never happened. Sandy Hook parents Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis brought the Texas case, but the unanimous opinion from the Texas Third Court of Appeals found they did not show sufficient evidence that harassment fueled by Jones's hoax claims reached the legal threshold required to support the larger award.

For the families, the ruling is a gut punch. They had already fought through years of litigation to reach that $50 million figure, and now watch it reduced by nearly 97 percent in a single appellate decision. Jones, who filed for bankruptcy as legal costs mounted, still faces a separate $1.4 billion judgment against him in Connecticut, meaning this Texas ruling does not end his legal exposure.

The Connecticut case, more than 900 times larger than what Texas now allows, is still standing.
