Texas Tech HSC, TTU announced largest NIH grant in System history - Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

The five-year grant comes through an NIH U54 cooperative agreement, a designation reserved for large-scale, multidisciplinary research programs. TTUHSC is teaming up with Texas Tech University on the project, pooling resources across two of Lubbock's biggest institutions. The money lands at a health sciences center that already serves as a research hub for West Texas.

TTUHSC plans to use the funding to build out research capacity, expand mentorship programs and boost professional development for researchers. Part of the goal is strengthening community engagement across the system's 121-county service area, a footprint that stretches far beyond Lubbock County into rural stretches of the South Plains and Panhandle. Smaller towns hours from any other hospital system often rely on TTUHSC as their closest major research and medical institution.

For people in Lubbock, this means more research infrastructure and career opportunities anchored right here instead of in Austin, Houston or Dallas. Students and early-career researchers get a shot at mentorship programs funded directly by federal dollars, while rural patients across the region could eventually see benefits trickle down through expanded outreach tied to the grant.
