Texas Tech reaches record student enrollment over 46,000

The number builds on previous enrollment growth on a campus that keeps expanding its footprint across Lubbock. More students on campus means more foot traffic around the Depot District, more renters filling up apartments near University Avenue, and more competition for parking anywhere close to Broadway.

Tech's growth has ripple effects well beyond the classroom. Local restaurants, coffee shops, and retail spots that lean on student business feel it directly. Neighborhoods bordering campus, from Tech Terrace to the streets just west of University, absorb the overflow when dorms and nearby housing fill up fast. A bigger student population also means a bigger presence at games, at Buddy Holly Hall events, and pretty much anywhere else students show up in numbers.

For people who live and work near campus, this is one more sign that Tech isn't slowing down. Landlords benefit, and so do small businesses near campus, but it also means longer waits at popular lunch spots and tighter housing inventory heading into next year.

At some point, Lubbock has to ask how many more students the city around campus can actually hold.
