Texas Tech Reveals New Way To Honor Clifford Jones

The stadium itself, known to generations of Red Raiders fans simply as "The Jones," was renamed Galaxy Stadium. Tech had been working through how to preserve the Jones legacy after that change, and the student section designation is the answer. Former university president Clifford B. Jones and his wife Audrey are both honored in the new name.

For students packing into the east stands on fall Saturdays, the name on their section just got a little more official. Longtime fans who grew up calling the place "The Jones" get to keep a piece of that identity alive, even if the stadium marquee reads something different now. It threads the needle between moving forward with a new naming rights deal and respecting more than two decades of fan tradition, with a nickname that had been part of the local vocabulary for over 20 years.
